Why strong Legal Studies students still lose marks
The four errors that keep well prepared students in the middle bands, and the correction for each one.
Sessions with Ramsay Hussein, a practising NSW secondary teacher with around 18 years in the classroom. Students learn to break a question apart, build an argument and defend it clearly under exam pressure.

Ramsay Hussein

Plenty of tutoring hands students a folder of notes and a model answer. It works until the question changes. Every HSC paper asks something slightly different, and memorised responses collapse the moment they meet an unfamiliar directive verb.
Sessions here are built the way good coaching is built: work out exactly what is holding the marks back, teach the correct technique explicitly, give honest feedback, and practise until the student can do it independently under time pressure.
Reading the directive verb, the limits and the actual task before writing a word.
Building a judgement that answers the question and holds across the whole response.
A consistent framework for evaluation so it is never improvised under pressure.
Legislation, cases, media, reports and contemporary examples used as proof, not decoration.
Openings that state a position immediately and conclusions that carry weight.
Written work marked against the criteria markers use, with the correction taught explicitly.
Timed writing so speed, structure and stamina are trained, not hoped for.
Identify the specific weakness, teach the technique, practise until it is independent.

Every session ends with the student knowing exactly what to do next.
Written feedback, a corrected example and a task to complete before the next session.
Ten criteria for evaluating the law, taught until evaluation becomes automatic. Students stop guessing at what evaluation means and start producing it in every paragraph, in every topic, under exam conditions.
